Bramwell Ludlow was killed when the tanker San Demetrio was tordedoed by U-404. The ship was made famous in 1942 when it was part of the Jervis Bay convoy and was attacked and abandoned by her crew but was re-boarded two days later by 16 crew who brought the fire under control and brought the ship home.

The story was made into a film also.
